Use the basic heartworm prevention, Hartgard Plus. The more things one pill covers, the greater risk for adverse reaction. Monthly heartworm prevention is to be given every 30 days, not once a month. The medications works backwards, covering the previous 30 days. No need to keep on year round unless weather dictates.

Don’t treat you dog for fleas or ticks unless you anticipate a real problem. Why expose your dog to extra drugs or chemicals.

At this time we do not vaccinate for Lymes or Letposporosis. The risk of exposure is not great enough to warrant the side affects of these vaccines.

The following are a few things to have on had for first aid:

Benadryl – dosage is 1 mg per pound of body weight given every 6 – 8 hours. Use for allergies, bug bites or stings.

Pepto Bismol – dosage is 1 teaspoon per 5 pounds of body weight given every 6 hours. Use for upset stomach and gas.

Kaopectate - dosage is 1 ml. per pound of body weight given every 2 hours. Use for diarrhea.

Hydrogen Peroxide 3% - dosage is 10 ml. orally given every 15 minutes to induce vomiting. Use if your dog swallows something that may cause a blockage such as socks, pieces of fabric, toys, etc. Do not use if the object is sharp or caustic. If this is the case contact poison control and/or your veterinarian.

Do not feed your dog from and elevated feeding dish. This contributes to bloat and torsion. A life threatening condition.

Recommended Products:

Pet Guard Gel - Fly protection for the ears and legs.

Frontline Spray – 30 day flea and tick protection. They also make a Top Spot but we prefer the spray.

Recommended Books:

“Dog Owners veterinary Handbook” written by Carlson & Giffin. This is a great book to have on hand. It is written in plain language and easy to look up symptoms and treatments.

“Retriever Training – A Back to Basics Approach” written by Robert Milner. This is a well written book for anyone looking to train their dog for hunting.
