New K-9 Officer
Irish’s ICO K-9 Tank
(BIS MBISS Am/Can Ch. Irish’s Royal Prince of Tides x Ch. Irish’s Royal Lady O’Grandeur)
Teddy’s life started out like any other puppy that leaves our house. He went to a loving home with a couple of kids that he loved and they loved him back. Well, after 2 years, there were major upheavals in his ‘family’ and a new home was needed for Teddy.
While hoping to find a new home, Teddy went to Daphne Black for some field training. He was there for about 3 months when Daphne got a call from Justin Blake, someone she knew from the local Retriever club. He was wondering about using a Chesapeake in his line of work, which was a Conservation officer for the state of Indiana. Daphne called us to find out exactly how old Teddy was and if we would be interested in letting Justin take a look at him. She told Justin about Teddy and the wheels were set in motion. Justin came to get Teddy but before he would be accepted into the program he had to pass a temperament test along with his hip & eye exams. He became the first Chesapeake accepted into the program and his name was changed to Tank.
Tank & Justin started the 13 week intensive training program. At the halfway point, he was already doing better than some of the dogs that had already completed the program.
Tank really excelled at tracking. Part of the final test included a half mile long track in varied terrain (mature hardwoods, short, medium and tall grasses, thicket and hard surface or asphalt), multi legged with one dead end. Tank completed it in 4 minutes. He graduated at the top of his class.
Tank not only performs man tracking, but he is certified and proficient at area searches and locating anything with human scent or gunpowder residue (firearms, shot shells, cartridges, wads etc). He is also certified in wildlife detection. The principles of wildlife detection mirror those of narcotic detection.
The Indiana DNR, besides doing work related to fish & game violations and search & rescue, also works with the police departments on various crimes.
Tank has a wonderful new home with Justin and his family. Justin has since added a second Chesapeake to his home for a hunting companion.
